Fundraiser to find leukemia cure
(Posted Date: Thursday, May 18, 2006)

Imagine there’s a cure for leukemia, says Nara Abrams. Abrams and her friend Jennifer Shulman are hoping to turn that dream into a reality with their upcoming Imagine a Cure for leukemia fundraiser on June 1. As chairs of the fundraiser, Abrams and Shulman are organizing a night of food, festivities and entertainment – all in hopes of raising awareness and money for leukemia research. "We’re hoping that we don’t have to do it for long because we really want to get a cure for this disease," Abrams said of the fundraiser that will held at the Capitol Event Theatre at 2492 Yonge St. Abrams was personally affected by leukemia when her mother, Miriam, was diagnosed with the cancer six years ago. Since her diagnosis, Miriam has undergone chemotherapy and radiation. It has been a difficult time, said Abrams, adding her mother’s courage has been the inspiration for the fundraiser. "She’s giving us strength to do this party," said Abrams. "She been really excited (about the fundraiser). She’s so impressed with the support from the community and the businesses that have been involved."

But the fundraiser won’t just be about raising funds. "We are hoping to achieve awareness about leukemia. It’s not necessarily a popular disease in the cancer spectrum but one in 65 men will be diagnosed with leukemia," she added. "Our real goal is to find a cure." Presented by Novartis, the corporate sponsor of the event, the night’s entertainment includes the Mockers, a Beatles cover band and No More DJ. The event includes hors d’ouvres catered by Perfect Plate Too, a silent auction and a raffle. Prizes include celebrity and sports memorabilia, gift certificates and diamond earrings by Steven Kruger.

All proceeds from the fundraiser will go to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada. Tickets are $50 and are available by email at: imagineacureforleukemia@yahoo.ca or can be purchased at North York’s You Name It, Baby on Wilson Ave.
